social_media_careertipsterTweet This: The College Loan Interest Extension Debate

This past week, President Barack Obama visited college towns across the country to talk about education, the importance of a college education, the usefulness of advanced degrees, as well as student loans and the burden of paying them off. The real point of the visits, according to Sandra Fish, is actually “about persuading Congress to extend an interest rate cut on federally backed student loans.” One of the most relatable messages of the speech, according to attendees, was the President’s admission that he and the First Lady finished paying off their own student loans just eight years ago. He was mentioned in tweets almost a quarter of a million times last week, proving this is a hot-button issue for many Americans active on social media sites.

Facebook Update: We Have Jobs

The explosion of social media has become the new obvious. However, while media is agog with the explosion of users and the time spent online, the information technology community’s attention is drawn to the obvious: the number of trained and educated employees necessary to maintain these media platforms online. Whether one’s degree in IT is an online degree or earned in a classroom, there may be corresponding jobs available in the social media field. According to Susan Peyton’s article, “Where the Social Media Jobs Are,” on the site for Small Business Trends, there’s now officially an “Internet Marketing and Social Marketing” category of employment. The most popular positions include Social Media Strategists, Brand Managers, Online Community Managers, Marketing Managers and Content Writers. Starting salary ranges vary significantly according to geography, education and experience, from a minimum of $22,000 to over five times that amount.

LinkedIn Career Update: New Credentials

An article attributed to PayScale on the AOL Jobs site, “Emerging Jobs in Social Media,” concurs with most of Ms. Peyton’s piece mentioned above, but does present a unique point of view on both the direction of the employment trend and tips for garnering a position. According to PayScale, “a background in marketing, computer technology, copywriting or journalism is often a plus in landing Web 2.0 jobs.” This background need not be official employment by another company in the same line of work. Rather, the entrepreneurial spirit of the Internet is recognized by including successful personal Facebook pages or individual portfolio blogs as excellent references for consideration.

The same article identifies a list of the six most common jobs in social media, from the highest in salary and responsibility to the lower entry-level positions. The list begins with Social Media Strategists, identified as “the top of the heap,” followed by Community Managers, Bloggers, Social Media Marketing Specialists, Search Engine Marketing Associates and finally Online Customer Service Associates.

All of these social media platforms—from Facebook and Twitter to Delicious and Pinterest—with their dedicated users and enormous social popularity are changing our ideas about communication, trends and society. With some planning and dedication, they can also affect the lives of individuals prepared with experience and education as employment options. A career in social media may prove to be a long-term solution for someone interested in the field of computer science or information technology.

The Case for Podcasting as a Social Media Marketing Tool

Not much is said about podcasting when it comes to social media marketing. Consider this definition for social media: Any media that allows participation from users, and one in which those same users can contribute to. That describes much of what happens on websites that publish podcasts. Whether it’s in forums, comments posted in response to podcasts, or Facebook and Twitter accounts linked to podcasts, it’s hard to argue that podcasting is not a form of social media.

How Podcasting Works

With a computer microphone and/or access to a free conference telephone service online, you can be up and running with your own podcast. You can download Audacity, play around with the program and learn how to edit your own podcasts. BlogTalkRadio is a podcasting service that can help you create and publish podcasts if you don’t want to do it all on your own, and there are other services out there as well. Once you’ve recorded your podcast and are pleased with the finished product, you simply upload it your website and other websites, such as iTunes.

Social Media Aspects of Podcasting

Once the podcast is uploaded, it’s up to you to do the social media marketing to get listeners to interact. Here are some tips that have proven to be effective:

  • Ask listeners to volunteer to moderate forums, and “feed” recent forum comments on the home page
  • Encourage listeners to leave a voice message asking questions, and answer them during the shows
  • Post YouTube videos to illustrate concepts that you talked about during the podcasts and publish them on the podcast website as well
  • Encourage listeners to follow you on Twitter and to join you on Facebook

You don’t even have to host your own podcast if you’re not inclined towards that form of marketing. Hire someone with broadcasting experience to do it for you.

Yahoo Axis New Web Browser

yahoo-axisSomething new has been brewing with Yahoo, called Axis, which is their new internet browser.  The cool part of this new browser is that it connects to all your devices and shows the search results with screen shoots of the homepage.  This is more functional than Google’s Instant Previews, which only shows a snapshot of the homepage.  Google is working and adding new features such as links to important or useful pages to help the users experience.

This should be interesting as Google has recently launched Chrome, so Yahoo’s Axis may have a shot at competing with Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Opera.

You can sync your iPhone, iPad, and desktop together, which is something like the newly released Fifefox Sync.  This is only currently available as an app through the iPhone store.  Maybe soon Android will market this, but for now it remains in Apple’s hands.

Ethan Batraski, Yahoo special project director, wrote on the company’s search blog that “with a mobile-first focus,” the company “set out to completely re-think and re-design how users search and browse the Web.”

Watch the video below to see what Yahoo Axis is all about and how to download it and start playing with it.  Let us know your opinion of this new browser below.

Making LinkedIn Worthwhile: 3 Tips for an Effective Professional Profile

LinkedIn-ProfileLinkedIn is one of those social networking platforms that many people underestimate. While numerous seasoned professionals have tapped in to the platform’s networking power and professional potential, many newbie “real world-ers” (those who really need it) just don’t understand how important their LinkedIn network can be to their professional success. It’s no new news that unemployment rates are high, jobs are scarce, and fresh college graduates are suffering. These facts are certainly apparent and endlessly disheartening. However, there are tools available that many recent grads and young professionals just aren’t considering thoroughly enough. With around 147 million registered users as of January 2012, LinkedIn has become the largest professional network online. Providing connections in major areas of industry including hi-tech business, finance, manufacturing, and academics, LinkedIn has the potential to become a major job resource for young professionals if they know how to use it wisely. Try out these three tips to better utilize LinkedIn for your professional efforts.

Know Your Keywords

As any blogger or internet junkie can tell you, being successful online is all about being successful within the major search engines. If you want your website or blog seen, you have to rank highly in all the relevant search engines. Many don’t consider when using LinkedIn as a professional networking tool that the site relies just as heavily on search engine results as a website does. You want your LinkedIn profile to be easily searchable within the LinkedIn platform for employers and other connections. LinkedIn’s internal search engines weight the keywords you use in your profile, making it imperative that you pay close attention to the terms you use to describe your experience, expertise, and education. Consider things like your actual professional headline, the title of your professional fields, your specialties, interests, education, and the recommendations that people write for you. These areas should utilize intelligent keywords so that your profile is better seen.

Get Recommendations

linkedin-recommendationsThe recommendations section of your LinkedIn profile is extremely important. While LinkedIn suggests a minimum of three recommendations, it’s wise to get several more. Recommendations like these are a wonderful way for potential connections to see your worth. When retrieving recommendations from people within your professional background, keep in mind that not every comment has to come from an employer or boss. Coworkers, internships heads, professional acquaintances are all valid sources for recommendations on your profile. Try to get recommendations that are thorough and specific. Comments like “she’s really nice” or “he’s a hard worker”, while flattering, are not as useful in the business world. Send a bulleted list of things your recommender can touch on or send a sample recommendation for them to follow. Getting solid recommendations for the right types of people is key to really representing yourself well online.

Help Others Out

Another important part of making strong connections with LinkedIn and really getting your profile seen is working it both ways. If you want people to give you recommendations and help you find connections and jobs, then you have to help them out as well. Respond to questions that people ask you. Offer to help others find jobs and connections that may help them. While this may sound like a fairly simple concept, you’d be surprised to see how few people go both ways on LinkedIn. Offer your expertise and knowledge to individuals that you would like to connect with or who you think you can provide guidance to.

Pinterest Scams Soar

Pinterest is the fastest growing social media outlet ever. It only makes sense that scammers would exploit this powerful tool. The list of scams on Pinterest is steadily growing, but they all have one thing in common- brand recognition.

The use of images is extremely powerful, familiar images even more so. So, when a scammer chooses an image for their scam, it is only natural they would choose big, well-known brands like Starbucks and H&M.

pinterest scamsPhoto from adverlab.blogspot.com

The scams work something like this: A Pinner is shown a famous image and told they will get a gift card or coupon from this company if they-

  1. Re-Pin this image
  2. Enter personal data
  3. Enter free trials
  4. Install software
  5. Share on Facebook

All this adds up to stolen data, installed spyware, reoccurring charges to your credit card, and more faked out people.

The more these scams get shared and re-pinned, the more people get scammed. It is a win-win… for the scammers. And these things work because scammers know what they are doing. They use things like:

  1. Fake fave icons
  2. Fake countdown
  3. Fake ‘Pin It’ button
  4. Hidden ‘Pinnable’ images
  5. Faked friend endorsements
  6. Gullible people

Here is a lesson for you. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Do not re-pin or like anything before you check it out. And watch out for ‘free’ things and faked links. Don’t become another statistic.

The Value of Customer Testimonies in the Digital Age

Copywriting is the most valuable skill a marketer can possess. However, any online business owner or salesman can tell you that a great product description is only half the battle when it comes to making a sale. More and more in the digital age, people are relying on the input of others to make a purchasing decision. They want to know how similar individuals, even complete strangers, feel about a product before they commit. The easiest way to facilitate this is through the display of reviews on a product’s page. However, customer testimonials are tricky waters and can easily sink your business if not navigated carefully.

customer testimonials

As competition online becomes stiffer and more competitors set up shop, the value of a happy customer base becomes readily apparent. Shoppers today are jaded towards copywriting. They might be deterred if the writing is poor or unconvincing, but even the best copy is often not enough to sway a cynical reader. This is where customer reviews and testimonials step in to turn wavering minds into confident consumers.

Amazon is an excellent example of customer testimonials done right. Many of its products have hundreds, if not thousands, of reviews from real people detailing the good, the bad and everything in between. The average shopper skips over most of the product description and plunges right into the reviews to learn the truth about an item. Amazon has taught people to expect an organic sharing of information and experience in the marketplace. Because of this, a website without a review feature, or with only a few uniform, positive testimonies may arouse the suspicions of savvy buyers.

Your business probably does not have the broad user-base of Amazon, but there a few simple rules to follow when seeking and displaying testimonials. First, make sure your review system is as easy as possible. Leave a comment box-style input under the product and send out a friendly email asking for feedback about a week after a product is delivered. This reminds people to voice their opinion and will help you get a broad spectrum of responses. For service-oriented businesses, a whole page might be devoted to the testimonies of your customers, and video formats are especially powerful.

The most important thing to remember with testimonies is to be transparent and honest with your reviews. Don’t hire someone to write a bunch of positive reviews, and don’t block or edit a critical testimonial. Above all, customers value trust and they will be able to sense if something isn’t right with your reviews. Testimonies are a great asset in the age of sharing, so long as they are managed properly.

Creating MeetUp Groups And Clubs

If you have not already implemented a marketing plan that includes utilizing social media techniques then you are already falling behind your competition.  You must always be engaging your users/ customers/ clients to instill trust and authority in your industry.  To help with your social media campaign starting a group or club can be very helpful.  The most popular place to do this is at MeetUp.  Here you create groups or join other groups that interest you.  These are many other places to create a group or club, but MeetUp is by far the strongest in fellowship and users.  Other places include Facebook Groups, Yahoo Groups, Google Groups, LinkedIn Groups, and many other places.

Popular groups can have hundreds or thousands of members and even sponsorships from major corporations!  This is an excellent opportunity to network with others in your industry or find potential clients.  If you are looking to start a group on MeetUp then you must start off by planning out what the meeting will be about.  You must also write a through description of exactly what your group is about and why you are meeting together.  Once you have a few members you can start having meetings and sharing knowledge with one another.

Creating MeetUp Groups And Clubs

3 Steps For A Successful Meeting

 1) Content - In essence the point of having or joining any group is to gain knowledge.  This is done by a group member exchanging content with group members.  Not just any content works; it must be useful and valuable.

2) Structure - Surprisingly many group members like having structures meetings, whereas the leaders often like a meeting to just go with the flow and be spontaneous.  Make sure to plan out what you meeting will discuss a few days before every club meeting.

3) Communication - You need to always communicate your message to your group.  You need to step up as a leader and make decisions for your group.

If you utilize these tips your club will be a success.  This can be very helpful and if your group is large enough it will bring traffic to your website directly.  Groups grow organically so make them go viral anyway possible.
